What Breaks Your Heart?

At a time when resolutions and goals abound, and hope is renewed in many areas of our lives, I was reminded today of a very important question which we need to ask ourselves. While the question may not be profound, it is more important than how much weight we may want to lose or how many games we would like to win. The question at hand comes from studying the book of Nehemiah.

It was Nehemiah who had a heart for the people and the city of Jerusalem. It was Nehemiah who has been labeled as a great leader for what he accomplished through the people and in that city. But what caused Nehemiah to be moved so greatly was the same question that could move us to be and do the extraordinary!

"What breaks your heart?"

You can read more about what broke Nehemiah's heart in chapter 1 and his incredible response. In short, Nehemiah's heart broke for the people of Jerusalem and their city. People's lives were in utter ruin, as was the city. The irony is that it was the brokenness of others that ultimately broke Nehemiah's heart.

As coaches, God has placed us in the front lines, in the trenches, right smack dab in the middle of the game!! We are in a position to see hearts exposed and we are given the opportunity to respond with the love of Christ! What a beautiful calling on our lives and what peace and joy in knowing that by the grace of God, through the Holy Spirit, we can do and be more than we ever imagined!!

So what breaks your heart?
